Signs You Have an Ant Infestation

Some ant sightings are incidental. Others signal an active colony that may continue without targeted treatment. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Trails to food or water sources: Consistent lines of ants moving toward kitchens, bathrooms, or pantries point to active foraging from a nearby colony. Food residue, pet food, and leaky pipes can all sustain that activity.
  • Fire ant mounds in open soil: Mounds appearing near driveways, lawn edges, or garden beds indicate established outdoor colonies.
  • Sawdust or wood shavings: Small piles near baseboards, window frames, or structural wood suggest carpenter ant activity, which may also warrant checking for moisture issues nearby.
  • Winged ants indoors: Swarmers appearing inside, especially near windows or after rain, may indicate a mature colony associated with the structure. The significance depends on species and what an inspection finds.
  • Repeated DIY failures: If ant activity keeps returning after store-bought treatments, the colony may not have been located or reached. Cracks, gaps, and vegetation touching the structure can provide ants with ongoing entry points.

How We Identify & Treat Ant Colonies

We start with an inspection to identify the species and locate likely colony sites. Fire ants build soil mounds outdoors and can sting. Carpenter ants are associated with wood and may point to moisture conditions worth inspecting. Odorous house ants forage persistently indoors and follow well-worn trails to food sources. Argentine ants are also common in the Austin area. Because each species can respond differently to treatment, identification is essential to planning the service.

Treatment planning draws on the entomological background of both Rock and Steven Thweatt. Depending on what we find, we may use baiting products that foraging workers carry back to the colony, perimeter treatments that disrupt entry points and foraging trails, or targeted colony treatment for outdoor infestations.
