Generally, a pest is a pest because it either spreads or causes a disease, causes damage to our homes, or spoils our food. In short, all pests are harmful to humans.
Many pests carry the pathogens of diseases that can impact human health. The mosquito for example, some species can spread malaria. A honey bee can cause an allergic reaction in those people who have an allergy to their venom. In the stinger of a honeybee is a small amount of venom. Venoms are injected and toxins are not. So, the black widow spider does not have a toxin, it has a venom, just like a rattlesnake – Well, different venoms.
Pests can also damage our homes. Bats, which can carry rabbis, will also urinate and leave guano in their roosting sites, such as attics and wall spaces. Raccoons often damage buildings, such as screens or roof shingles to get into our homes. Nesting birds can make a mess on our cars, walkways, and even on or in our homes. Bird feces is somewhat acidic and it can discolor the paint on a vehicle.
Food pests such as weevils and small beetles can damage dry foods. Mice and rats will happily make a meal out of our food if they can gain access to it. Flies are another big pest issue. They both carry disease and houseflies regurgitate their last meal when they land. Som if they land on your food, they toss up their cookies and those cookies might be from dog poop or worse. Yuck.
There is just a huge list of pests and each does some kind of damage. A good example of one that does all of it is the biting fly. Not only can biting flies install panic in people, they can spread disease such as anthrax, and while they do not eat our food, they do cause damage to livestock.
