There is a long list of pests in Texas and around the Greater Austin Area that cause damage to homes and commercial buildings. One of the most obvious of those pests are rats. There are, however, many pests that are not as obvious, such as the powderpost beetle which is a mere 1/8 of an inch long. Also, while damage from rats can be obvious, some pest damage to builds can go unnoticed until the damage is so great that major repairs must be done. In this blog, we talk about some of the damage caused by pests and discuss some of the ways to prevents pest damage.
Major Damage Pests
When you talk to a homeowner about major pest damage to their home, the conversation is often about termites. While termites are the cause of significant damage if not detected and eradicated quickly, they are only one of many types of pests that can cause major damage to your home. Another pest that can topple your home is the Ground Squirrel. These large rodents can damage foundations, ruin patios, and cause significant structural damage to a building. While that is pretty dramatic, a single raccoon can destroy or damage roofing with repair costs in the thousands of dollars. Other big impact pests can be birds, mice, and other creatures that cause electical shortages in walls which lead to a structural fire. Yes, pests can do all of these things.
Small Damage Pests
On the opposite end of the spectrum are pests that cause little damage but are a nuisance such as ants. These creepy crawlers can lower your property value, especially fire ants. Pantry pests are another group of pests that are more of an annoyance than the source of damage. The exception here is mice which can cause moderate damage if they are digging into walls, shreading carpet or staining sheetrock with urine.
Moderate Damage Pests
Squirrels – tree and ground – squirrels are diggers and they will destoy screening on vents, chew roofing and siding to gain access to the walls of you home, the attic, or the space under your home. Carpenter bees are another pest that can range from minor damage to major damage. Carpenter ants can also cause moderate damage. Carpenter ants are different from termites, though they often target wood in foundations. Termites eat wood, carpenter ants only excavate wood to create a living space but that excavation can cause weakness in wood that plays a supporting role, such as floor beams and foundation beams.
There is also a whole list of pests that cause no damage, such as fleas, bedbugs, and spiders. A bed bug infestation can be very expensive though.
One of the best ways to avoid major and moderate damage by pests is with a regular pest inspection.
